LEGO® therapy is a structured, evidence-based play intervention originally designed to support children with autism and social communication difficulties. It usually takes place in groups, where children take on collaborative roles (e.g., builder, engineer, supplier).
The group format promotes:
Turn-taking
Joint attention
Problem-solving
Social communication
Teamwork
🔹 Individual LEGO® Therapy
Some children may benefit more from 1:1 sessions with a therapist before, or instead of, joining a group.
When Individual Sessions Are Helpful
Child is not yet ready for group interaction (e.g., highly anxious, easily frustrated).
Child needs practice with emotional regulation in a safe setting.
Child has significant language or social communication delays.
To target specific goals before transitioning to group work.
How It Can Work
Therapist and child still use LEGO® roles (therapist may play the "builder" or "engineer" while the child plays another role).
Skills can be scaffolded gradually, e.g.:
Following instructions with support.
Taking turns with roles.
Practicing asking for pieces or clarifications.
Moving towards problem-solving and negotiation.
Child can be coached explicitly in social communication, flexibility, and frustration tolerance.
Benefits
Safe, low-pressure environment.
Therapist can model skills directly.
Individualised pace and goals.
Prepares the child for later group participation
